How to attract more subscribers to your email list

20/11/2019

Are you thinking of starting an email newsletter but not sure how to attract subscribers? Or maybe you already have a regular newsletter but want more people to read it? In this blog, I share some easy ways to get the attention of more people and get more sign ups.
1. Create a sign up form
Before you can think about getting the sign ups, you need to ensure that you have a process in place to collect email addresses. This could be a Mailchimp sign up link, an integrated web sign up form or a coded form you've created. The important thing is you have a sign up mechanism.

2.  Put the form where people are interacting with you
Once you have the sign up form, make sure you have it available in all the right places. Think:

  • Where do my audience interact with me?
This could be your website, Facebook page or Instagram profile.

  • Where do I interact with audience?
This could be networking, Facebook groups or workshops.

Make a list of these places and do a mini audit to see if there are ways people can sign up to your email list in all these places. Take into account online and offline channels. Remember you can add links to business cards and literature too.

TOP TIP
Think about things like email signatures, event confirmation messages and other communications you send where you can add a newsletter sign up link.

3. Talk about it
An important step is actually to talk about it, turn your email newsletter into a conversation. It's not just a passive interaction, you want active engagement so these people become subscribers.
  • Use your social media channels to let people know you're about to send out your newsletter and give them the link to sign up.
  • Share your newsletter on social media and ensure there is a link to sign up.
  • Talk to people about the content of your newsletter - "All my events are in my next newsletter" or "You can find out more details about the retreat in my next newsletter". Give them a reason to subscribe!
  • Encourage existing subscribers to share by adding a Forward to a Friend button or link into your emails.
  • Use face-to-face events to get sign ups. Have a paper or electronic sign up sheet to get more subscribers at events or workshops you run. It's usually best to be able to send out an email as they join or within 24 hours to keep them engaged.
