Changes to social media this year has seen more and more businesses throwing money at advertising just so they can get seen but, in a world where people are looking for meaningful stories, how can businesses strive to be more authentic online?
Authenticity is a word often associated with your sense of self and how you come across to others. It's about being yourself and being real about what you do, not hiding behind anything. The same can apply to businesses too, so here's how you can make your business more authentic on social media:
Create a personality
Let your personality shine through your social media feeds. The difference between you and your competitors is YOU! Use your uniqueness to stand out and create a voice that people can relate to and get used to. Don't be afraid to be yourself online, just keep it professional.
Engage in conversations (without having a hidden agenda)
Be an active member of the online community and provide value to others by answering their queries. Instead of always looking for chances to sell or relate things to your business, just be a real person and be useful. You will get noticed more this way than if you are always broadcasting advertising messages. In fact, according to Sprout Social, 57% of people get annoyed with too many promotions by brands on social media.
As well as talking and interacting, it is just as important to step back and listen in to what your audience are interested in. Social listening, or social monitoring as it's often known, is a way for businesses to find out more about what is being said about their business or their industry online. You can do this by following online chat groups, searching on sites like Netmums or other websites with Community chat pages, and you can also set up free Google Alerts to monitor the web for related news. You can then use this knowledge to create useful resources to share online.
