This year has seen a lot of changes in the digital marketing world. With Facebook moving
towards a local community approach, Instagram monitoring time spent on their app, Google
bringing in mobile first optimisation and their announcement about the closure of Google+,
what does 2019 have in store for us?
We spoke to Alex from XIST2, an online digital marketing agency based in Faringdon, Oxfordshire who specialise in web design, brand design, graphic design and online marketing, and asked what trends they think we might see over the next 12 months.
So Alex, you must see a lot of different clients in your agency, what has been the biggest priority in terms of digital marketing?
As you say we have a lot of different clients from different industries, but the most common request has been to ensure that their websites are mobile friendly. This certainly isn’t a new thing and not a ‘trend’ for 2019, but we’ve found that people are becoming more aware of the need to have a responsive site.
Voice search is a big topic now, particularly now with things like Google Assistant and Alexa. What would be your advice for business owners who want to get a voice strategy in place?
Alexa and Google Assistant are becoming more and more common. They’re becoming part of everyday life, with 41% of people even say they feel like they’re talking to a friend or another person.
Many business owners often think that new technology developments like this won’t apply to their
business and this is very risky. As users adopt new ways of searching, businesses need to find the
right ways of presenting themselves.
In terms of SEO and search ads, consider how your users are now searching. Are you using long tail keywords and conversational search terms to match the style that people are now using? Does your website have enough written content to answers questions that Google might be searching for? Is the user experience enabling your users to find the information they need and want quickly?
Rather than muddling through, consider working with a great agency who can help you navigate through the changes you need to make.
What other trends do you think we’ll see for 2019 in the digital marketing arena?
More and more organisations are using social media to advertise their products and services, and
platforms such as Facebook will have to work hard to make sure that advertisers are getting the
traction they need. It’s a very full market and we have to be more intelligent in the ways that we
advertise as well as the organic content we create.
The ‘fake news’ scandal isn’t going away any time soon and social media played a huge part in this.
Platforms such as Facebook are keenly moving back to being more of a trusted community and I
think we’ll see a much greater degree of transparency going forward.
Video certainly isn’t a new trend, it is (or should be) the norm. That said, I think we’ll see more and more organisations realising the value of using video as content in 2019 and rightly so!
There are so many developments in the pipeline such as augmented reality, but the trick for
organisations will be to make sure they’re using the right marketing and technologies for their
organisation and message rather than just jumping on a digital marketing trend bandwagon.
It can feel a bit overwhelming for small business owners with all these things to think about. What would you say is the priority in terms of digital marketing efforts?
Digital marketing can definitely be overwhelming for business owners but it’s about getting the
basics right before trying to do too much.
The basics to focus on are:
imperative. Creating content for social media and then directing people to an outdated, difficult to
navigate website won’t be helping you.
At this stage we’d recommend working with an agency who will use their knowledge and expertise
to get your digital marketing basics up to scratch.
